Governments Urged To Take Stronger Approach To Aviation Crisis
Governments urged to take stronger approach to aviation crisis by Cheap Flights Booker UK
European governments have been urged to strengthen their approach to resolving the ongoing aviation crisis across the continent.
The eruption of a volcano in southern Iceland last Wednesday (14 April) created a cloud of ash that has drifted into European airspace, leading to the suspension of almost all flights to and from the UK since Thursday.
Several other countries have been forced to shut down airports, including France, Germany and Holland, with restrictions still in place today (19 April) at major hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Amsterdam Schiphol.
However, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) has claimed that governments have shown a lack of leadership and should take a new approach to the crisis in order to get stranded travellers home and prevent further losses for European economies and airlines.
"Governments must place greater urgency and focus on how and when we can safely reopen Europe"s skies," said Iata director general Giovanni Bisignani.
"This means decisions based on risk management, facts and utilising operational procedures that maintain safety."
EU transport ministers are set to hold an emergency video conference to discuss how to tackle the crisis.
