Icelandair Arranges Special Flights To Get Uk Passengers Home
Icelandair arranges special flights to get UK passengers home by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Icelandair became one of the first airlines to fly into the UK on Friday (16 April) following a volcanic eruption in Iceland two days earlier, which has led to widespread flight cancellations throughout Europe.
While restrictions remain in place across most of the UK"s airspace, limited services have been available in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Icelandair was therefore able to operate three special flights from Reykjavik to Glasgow on Friday to carry about 600 stranded passengers back to the UK.
The returning travellers included a number of school groups who had been in Iceland on a geography field trip.
Hjorvar Saeberg Hognason, general manager of Icelandair UK, said: "We knew that we had several school groups in Iceland whose return flights had been cancelled due to the eruption.
"We were in touch with all of them and while they were in good spirits and even enjoying their extra time in Iceland, we knew their parents were anxious and wanted to get them home."
He went on to reveal that Reykjavik"s international airport has remained open as the volcanic eruption is not affecting the airspace around the capital city.
A recent update from National Air Traffic Services advised that the current restrictions on flights to and from the UK remain in place until 01:00 BST on Tuesday 20 April.
