Kentucky Derby to attract 1.5m race-goers by Cheap Flights Booker UK
One of the world"s biggest race meetings will be getting underway in North America in a matter of weeks.
The Kentucky Derby, which takes place on May 1st, is hoping to attract crowds of more than 1.5 million people, with the big day preceded by the Kentucky Derby Festival beginning on Saturday (10 April).
This year"s festival will feature more than 70 events including Thunder Over Louisville, the opening ceremony that will incorporate North America"s largest fireworks display.
Mike Cooper, the Kentucky Department of Travel"s commissioner, said the race meeting is the biggest event of its kind in the US.
"It"s a great place for celeb spotting and fashion, with many attendees spending more time and money on their outfits than at the betting windows," he commented.
Mr Cooper went on to recommend that the more adventurous travellers take advantage of horse riding activities in the region, particularly in the "horse capital of the world", Lexington.
The first Kentucky Derby took place in 1956 and attracted a crowd of 50,000 race-goers.
