New Woodland Trail In The Lake District
New woodland trail in the Lake District by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Families booking a holiday in the Lake District can explore a new woodland trail that has been created in Whinlatter Forest.
Bassenthwaite Reflections, a community landscape programme, has spent three years clearing Masmill Oakwood in order for new native trees to flourish, and the new mile-long trail is a tribute to the thousands of hours of volunteer work that has gone into the clearing.
Head of the scheme Martin Varley said that members of the public have given "an enormous amount of help" clearing conifers and other invasive species.
"In our last year of operations, the Forestry Commission is helping us plant oak and indigenous trees which will have huge benefit in the future," he commented.
"But we also wanted to leave behind something that would be immediately tangible and meaningful."
Mr Varley went on to say that the woodland trail is a reminder of the commitment of local people and a way of showing the value of conserving native woodland.
The Lake District is England"s largest national park, covering an area 2,292 sq km.
