San Francisco airport marked Earth Day yesterday (22 April) by hosting a tour of its Terminal 2 building, focusing on the sustainable aspects of its renovation.
The $383m (£250m) revamp of the facility is scheduled for completion in spring 2011, when it will become the new base for Virgin America and American Airlines" domestic flights.
Expected to achieve silver designation on the LEED green building certification scheme, the hub will be "one of the greenest and most modern airport terminals in the country", according to its managers.
Several strategies are being used to ensure the sustainability of Terminal 2, including the use of energy efficient lighting and machinery.
Hydration stations will also be installed so travellers can fill up their own water bottles, while a food marketplace will sell locally sourced and organic produce.
San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said: "Designing and building a more sustainable T2 is an investment in our future.
"Not only do our efforts help the planet, at the same time, these improvements will greatly enhance customers" experience and help to grow the Bay Area"s economy."
