Transport secretary Philip Hammond has revealed plans to improve London Heathrow by reducing the airport"s queues and delays and improving its record with regards to lost luggage.
Speaking in an interview with the Evening Standard, Mr Hammond said that the new coalition government will introduce cash incentives for operators to cut queues and improve their efficiency.
He blamed the current regulatory system for holding London Heathrow and other airports back.
"The airport economic regulation model … is hopelessly out of date. It is mired in 70s thinking," he told the newspaper.
Mr Hammond revealed his ambition to turn Heathrow into a "world-class airport", which he described as "a big challenge".
Heathrow is one of the world"s busiest airports, with nearly 66m passengers in 2009 and an average of 1,260 air transport movements every day.
It hosts flights to destinations all over the world, the most popular of which are New York, Dubai, Dublin, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
