Blackpool voted top UK seaside resort by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Blackpool is the UK"s favourite seaside resort, according to a survey carried out by Which? Holiday.

The consumer group questioned more than 4,000 consumers and found that 6.7% thought Blackpool was the top destination for a beach holiday in the UK.

Its special atmosphere and famous annual illuminations were among the factors that helped win support for the resort in north-west England.

Brighton came second in the survey with 5.9% of the vote, while Whitby (3.5%), Bournemouth (3.4%) and Scarborough (3.3%) completed the top five.

Rochelle Turner, head of research for Which? Holiday, said: "Millions of Brits will be taking holidays at home this year, and it"s certainly one way to ensure you don"t fall victim to volcanic ash.

"While Blackpool may not be able to guarantee the weather, with its host of theatres, fairgrounds and every conceivable promenade entertainment, it"s easy to see why the granddaddy of seaside towns still manages to draw the crowds."

The research revealed that 40% of British adults enjoyed a trip to the coast in 2009 and 20% are more likely to visit a UK seaside resort this year.
