Etihad Airways has announced that it experienced its strongest ever first half to a year between January and June.

The airline recorded strong growth in traffic during the period, with passenger numbers rising 11% from the same period in 2009 to reach almost 3.3m.

Seat occupancy factors increased from 71.5% to 72.5%, despite the disruption caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland in April and May.

Etihad expanded its international network in the first half of the year with the launch of flights to Tokyo from Abu Dhabi, becoming the first Middle Eastern airline to operate a service to the Japanese capital.

James Hogan, the carrier"s chief executive officer, said: "We are very pleased with our performance over the first half of this year. Despite the continuing economic challenges faced by all airlines, our investment in infrastructure and in our service offer is paying off.

"Looking forward, the trends are promising, with forward bookings on an upward trajectory. We are also seeing signs of improvements in premium traffic."

Etihad"s performance was recognised at the World Travel Awards ceremony for the Middle East in May, where it was named the region"s leading airline.
