Holidaymakers Encouraged To Go Green
Holidaymakers encouraged to "go green" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Britons planning trips abroad this year have been encouraged to maintain environmentally friendly habits and practices during their holiday.
New research by Abta - The Travel Association and the Travel Foundation reveals that almost 90% of people regularly recycle at home, but less than half continue to do so overseas.
One in five holidaymakers surveyed said they "switch off completely" during a beach holiday and don"t think about the environment.
Abta and the Travel Foundation highlighted a number of ways for people to reduce the environmental impact of their break, such as taking showers rather than baths, shopping for souvenirs in local markets and turning off air conditioning when it is not needed.
Nikki White, head of destinations and sustainability at Abta, said: "Nearly 40m of us travelled abroad on holiday last year and when we are in our holiday destination there are also some very simple things every one of us can do to protect scarce water supplies, reduce the amount of plastic waste that goes into landfill and support local people who depend on tourism to make a living."
The research was carried out as part of Make Holidays Greener week, a national campaign that is being supported by companies including Virgin Atlantic.
