South Africa, already enjoying the global attention that comes with being the host nation for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, received another boost this week at the Africa and Indian Ocean leg of the World Travel Awards.
The ceremony, which was held in Johannesburg on 7 July, saw Cape Town named Africa"s leading destination and Sun City voted the leading family resort.
Shamwari Game Reserve and the Palazzo Montecasino in South Africa received the awards for leading conservation company and casino resort respectively, while the country"s Blue Train was announced as the best luxury rail service.
South African Airways picked up the leading airline accolade and OR Tambo International in Johannesburg was named the best airport.
There were accolades for other countries, with Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt voted the best beach destination and Morocco"s Palmeraei Golf Palace winning the title of Africa"s best golf resort.
World Travel Awards founder Graham Cooke said: "Customer care and professionalism of African tourism has come a long way in the years since the World Travel Awards was first started.
"What is so encouraging for Africa is that unlike much of the world, the region has determinedly bucked the trend, notably with the sub-Saharan destinations which are doing particularly well."
