Thailand Welcomes More Visitors Despite Political Crisis
Thailand welcomes more visitors despite political crisis by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Thailand attracted more tourists in the first six months of the year despite the recent political crisis, which led to protests and violent clashes in parts of the country in May and June.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) revealed that more than 7.5m visitors arrived between January and June, up 13.7% from the 6.6m recorded in the corresponding period in 2009.
One of the main reasons behind the trend is the popularity of Phuket, which continued to attract travellers while Bangkok was affected by the political and civil unrest.
Arrivals in the first half of 2009 were affected by the global economic crisis, meaning that this year"s statistics were compared to a relatively low base figure.
A series of recovery programmes and promotional initiatives have been launched recently, meaning that tourism figures in Thailand have improved in the months of June and July.
The TAT said it was optimistic that the industry could reach its target of 14.5m arrivals this year.
