Convictourism Trend Identified In Tasmania
"Convictourism" trend identified in Tasmania by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The recent addition of several penal sites on the island of Tasmania to the Unesco World Heritage list has paved the way for a trend of "convictourism", according to the destination"s tourism agency.
Unesco announced this month that a total of 11 former Australian convict sites, including five in Tasmania, were being inscribed on the list.
The newly recognised locations in the country"s southernmost state include Port Arthur and the coal mines on the Tasman peninsula, Darlington probation station on Maria Island and the Woolmers and Brickendon estates near Longford.
Visitors can also see historic penal sites in New South Wales, Western Australia and Norfolk Island.
Felicia Mariani, chief executive officer of Tourism Tasmania, said: "The listing is great news for our tourism industry and will allow us the opportunity to build an additional dimension to our visitors" experiences."
She added: "Given our history and rich colonial heritage, it is fitting that our state has now received recognition for these five important convict heritage sites. It can only add further to our reputation as a world-class destination."
Ms Mariani also highlighted the region"s national parks, forests, marine reserves and other natural attractions.
