Esta Charge Positive For US Travel
Esta charge "positive for US travel" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
New charges for entry to the US will provide a big benefit for the tourism industry without having too much of an effect on individuals, according to the US Travel Association.
It was announced this week that travellers from Visa Waiver Program countries, such as the UK, will have to pay a small fee when applying for a mandatory Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) from 8 September.
Laura Mason-Byers, UK press officer for the US Travel Association, pointed out that the overall charge of $14 (£9) covers multiple entries to the country over a two-year period and will not impact too much on holidaymakers.
"It will give a boost to US travel, which I think they probably need at the moment," she added. "I think people will understand. Many countries charge a surcharge for entry and exit."
Ms Mason-Byers also pointed out that the fees will not come into effect until September and warned travellers to be wary of rogue websites that are charging for Esta applications.
"It is currently free and it will be until the day that they have proposed, which is 8 September," the spokeswoman said. "If people are planning a trip to America, now is the time to get their Esta without having to pay."
