New Delta Flights Would Boost Competition At Heathrow
New Delta flights "would boost competition at Heathrow" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Delta Air Lines has announced plans to launch new US flights from London Heathrow in order to boost competition at the airport.
The carrier has filed applications with the European Commission and the transportation department in the US to operate a twice-daily service to Boston and a daily connection to Miami from Heathrow.
Delta pointed out that the London hub is "tightly restricted" by airport slot restraints.
Nearly half (47%) of the takeoff and landing spaces at Heathrow are currently held by the oneworld alliance, which includes American Airlines and British Airways.
Star Alliance carriers such as bmi, Lufthansa and US Airways account for 25% of slots, while SkyTeam, which includes Delta, Air France-KLM and Alitalia, only holds 5%.
"Delta"s new service would provide more choices and competition for customers travelling between these important US cities and London, one of the most popular destinations in Europe for both business and leisure travellers," said Glen Hauenstein, the airline"s executive vice-president of network planning and revenue management.
"Awarding these slots to Delta and SkyTeam would significantly enhance competition among the major alliances across the Atlantic."
If approved, the new routes from Heathrow to Boston and Miami will be launched on 27 March 2011.
