Travellers Urged To Take Simple Steps To Keep Passports Safe

Travellers urged to take "simple steps" to keep passports safe by Cheap Flights Booker UK

British travellers have been reminded of some simple steps they can take to ensure their passports are kept safe.

The latest figures from the government show that more than 60,000 Britons reported a lost or stolen passport between April 2009 and March this year.

This is despite a recent survey by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) which found that 83% of people claim to store their passport in a safe place.

Before leaving, travellers should make two photocopies of their ID documents, leaving one at home and keeping the other separate from their passport.

The IPS also encouraged people to think about the best place to keep their passport at home and abroad and show caution if they are asked to surrender the document.

Anyone who loses a passport while overseas should report the incident to the local police and inform the British Consulate.

Sarah Rapson, chief executive of IPS, said: "It is vital that people take care of their passports, both at home and abroad. Passports are increasingly attractive documents to organised criminals.

"Hijacking someone else"s identity can help facilitate a wide range of very serious crimes."
