Uganda Gorilla Tour Voted Best Wildlife Encounter
Uganda gorilla tour voted best wildlife encounter by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda has been voted the greatest wildlife encounter on offer to travellers in the inaugural Lonely Planet Awards.
The travel guide publisher surveyed more than 3,500 people for its first ever awards programme.
Visiting the Mayan temples at Tikal, Guatemala was named the best historical experience ahead of the Taj Mahal in India and Egypt"s pyramids, while the Monaco Grand Prix emerged as the top sporting event.
The survey also asked people about holidays in the UK, with walking on Scotland"s wild beaches being voted the most underrated day out in Britain.
Lonely Planet"s travel editor Tom Hall said: "The results of the Lonely Planet Awards include some surprising winners, such as the Mayan temples at Tikal.
"The success of these lesser-known attractions really highlights how worthwhile it is to venture away from some of the world"s best-known places and sights and discover what else the world has to offer."
Michael Palin was found to be the most popular travel buddy among voters, followed by Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley.
The full list of winners features in the September issue of Lonely Planet Magazine.
