Almost a third (29%) of respondents adopting this strategy said they wanted to avoid visiting a destination that was packed with tourists, while the same proportion said they wanted to save money.
On average, British travellers polled by Tesco Bank expect to save about £308 by going away out of season.
John Howells, the company"s head of travel money, said: "In the current climate, many people have been waiting to see if their finances can stretch to a break this year and are hoping late deals will offer them good savings."
More than half (57%) of people intending to travel abroad from September plan to stay in Europe, while 22% said they would base their choice of destination on where they can get the best bargains.
