Egyptian resorts launch clean-up operation by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The luxury resort towns of El Gouna and Taba Heights plan to boost their environmental credentials with major clean-up operations on land and at sea.
Orascom Development announced that the destinations are launching the initiatives to mark World Tourism Day on 27 September and support the Professional Association of Diving Instructors" Aware project.
Volunteers from local hotels, dive centres, schools and other establishments will be offering their time to support the operation, with a target to exceed the total of 300 people who participated last year and collected five tonnes of rubbish in a single day.
In El Gouna, one group of volunteers will cover a 3,000-metre stretch of beach and another will focus on one of the northern islands, which is a reserve for turtles and birds.
The operation in Taba Heights will see divers clean up the coral reef while other participants concentrate their efforts on land.
Omar Halaby, vice-president of marketing at Orascom Development, said: "At El Gouna and Taba Heights we are committed to ensuring we minimise our impact on the environment and benefit the local area and community.
"Our beach and underwater clean-ups have proved a huge success in the past and we look forward to another triumphant year in aid of our precious local ecosystem."
