Women are more likely than men to choose their family"s travel destination, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by Tesco Finance found 27 per cent of women believe they are the main decision-makers when it comes to holiday location, compared to 17 per cent of men.

However, the same survey also found that the roles are reversed when it comes to finances as more men than women take control of the purse strings when on vacation.

Yet even with strict budgetary controls, 37 per cent of people say they overspend while abroad, with John Howells, head of travel money at Tesco Bank, highlighting the need for travellers of both sexes to stretch their cash as far as possible.

"With the average person spending £338 each week whilst away, it is essential people find the best deal to make your holiday money stretch a lot further, and ensure you don"t lose out on any savings you might have made by picking up a cheap break in the off-peak season sales," he confirmed.

More than half (56 per cent) of men say they oversee spending when in a foreign country.

Meanwhile, a recent Mintel study found more than a quarter of 16 to 24-year-olds said they spend more than they have budgeted for when on holiday.
