The city"s rich history, as well as its vibrant shopping scene, is behind the ongoing increase in the number of tourists checking in to Cardiff hotels, the findings of a new study suggest.

According to the latest figures released by Cardiff City Council, some ten million tourists visited the city over the first six months of 2010 alone.

This represents a marked increase on the figure of seven million recorded for the same period of 2009, with a number of factors found to be behind this rise in popularity.

Of those visitors from overseas polled by the council, 80 per cent said that seeing Cardiff Castle was a priority for them, while 70 per cent also expressed a strong desire to see Cardiff Bay.

Meanwhile, among day-trippers, the shops in the city centre and the Millennium Stadium proved to be major draws, with Councillor Nigel Howells, Cardiff"s executive member for tourism, noting that this "fantastic combination" should see the Welsh capital continue to sell itself both at home and abroad.

"It"s fantastic news that so many people are coming to our city," he told the South Wales Echo.

The site of Cardiff Castle in the city centre boasts a Norman keep as well as a Victorian mansion fashioned in the Gothic Revival style.
