Indeed, the latest Top Ten Islands in Europe poll carried out by the publication found that Ibiza, Mallorca, Capri and Sicily remain as popular as ever with its readers, suggesting demand for flights to Palermo and elsewhere could stay strong for the foreseeable future.

At the same time, however, there were some relatively-unexpected island destinations making the top ten.

These include the Isle of Skye in Scotland, which was ranked one place above Sicily, as well as Hvar in Croatia, with this new entry propping up the table.

The largest of Scotland"s Inner Hebrides group of islands, Skye is well-known for its strong cultural scene, and especially its strong folk music tradition.
