Filming of JRR Tolkien"s The Hobbit is set to go ahead in New Zealand after an agreement was reached between the prime minister and studio bosses.
Prime minister and tourism minister John Key met with executives from Warner Studios to encourage them to commit to filming the two-part movie in New Zealand.
The news comes as great relief to the government and tourism board alike, as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy shot by director Peter Jackson from 2001-03 proved to be a huge draw for visitors the country.
Suzanne Carter, general manager of public affairs for Tourism New Zealand, said: "We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of these negotiations. The Hobbit provides us with another great opportunity to promote New Zealand to the world in a unique way and to raise awareness of New Zealand as a visitor destination."
Official government figures published this week show that in the year to March 2010, tourism was New Zealand"s biggest source of foreign expenditure, beating the country"s dairy sector into second place.
