Official calls for increased tourism to Ottawa by Cheap Flights Booker UK

The tourism industry in Ottawa, Canada should receive much more support, an official has said.

Mayoral candidate Jim Watson noted that Ottawa is one of the few cities in Canada that does not provide direct financial support to its tourism industry and maintained that the destination has not received the kind of attention it deserves.

Mr Watson, who is the former president of the Canadian Tourism Commission, said holiday industry is the third largest sector in Ottawa, supporting over 26,000 jobs and contributing $2.2 bn (£1.3 bn) to the economy.

"We must begin now to ensure Ottawa is the focal point for the sesquicentennial celebrations in our country," he told the Ottawa Citizen.

"Ottawa should own 2017 and be prepared to welcome the country and the world to our city in the years leading up to 2017."

If elected, Mr Watson said he would liaise with leaders from the tourism industry to attract more visitors from around the world to Ottawa.
