Tokyo voted top foreign city for Brits by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Tokyo emerged as the top overseas destination in the 2010 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards.

The Guardian revealed that the Japanese capital stormed in "from nowhere in a bold neon blaze", taking top place from Sydney, which slipped to third.

Berlin, San Francisco and Krakow completed the top five.

Austria emerged as the most popular European country ahead of Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia and Italy, while the Maldives was the top long-haul country, followed by Japan, New Zealand, Peru and Chile.

When asked to rate overseas attractions, Guardian and Observer readers recommended Iguazu Falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina and the Grand Canyon in the US.

Singapore Airlines picked up the title of best long-haul airline for the seventh consecutive year, while Swiss was voted the top short-haul carrier.

Other operators mentioned include Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, Emirates and KLM.

On the domestic holiday scene, the Victoria and Albert Museum received the award for the top UK tourist attraction and Edinburgh emerged as readers" favourite city.
