Brits "spent Â21.5bn on weekend breaks in past year" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The popularity of weekend breaks has been revealed by Santander Cards, which released a report showing that British adults have spent a total of £21.5bn on these trips in the past year.
Six in ten (61%) people have enjoyed at least one weekend away in the past 12 months, according to the survey, spending an average of £719.
London emerged as the most popular weekend break destination in the UK, with a fifth (19%) of people who have taken a short trip in the past year having visited the capital.
Manchester, York, Edinburgh and the Lake District completed the top five.
France topped the list of overseas locations that are popular for weekend getaways, followed by Ireland, Spain, Italy and Holland.
Ian Coles, director of Santander Cards, said: "With more flight routes and last-minute holiday deals making weekend breaks easier, along with a trend for stag and hen dos that last a whole weekend much more common nowadays, the weekend getaway industry is huge both at home and abroad."
