Egypt investing in historic hotels by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Investment of US$368m (£229m) has been announced for the preservation and protection of nine historic hotels in Egypt.
The luxury properties are situated in prime locations across the country and will receive the financial support over the next three years to ensure they are maintained as historic landmarks for future generations.
Owned by a subsidiary of the Holding Company for Tourism, Hotels and Cinema (Hotac), the range of establishments includes the Cairo Marriott Hotel and Omar Khayyam Casino, the Mena House Oberoi at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Nile Ritz Carlton Cairo.
The Winter Palace in Luxor and the Palestine Hotel in Alexandria are also set to receive investment over the coming years.
Aly Abdel Aziz, president and chief executive officer of Hotac, said: "This is an important day for the Egyptian hotel industry. These historic buildings have now been protected by the government and will never be sold to outside investors.
"As part of this commitment, these properties will undergo total renovation to bring them back to their former glory whilst conserving their original features."
