Film fans have been encouraged to pay a visit to the island of Djerba during a holiday in Tunisia.

Located off the east coast of the African country, Djerba is a relatively new destination for Brits but is becoming increasingly popular.

Commenting on the appeal of the destination, Ffion Davies, press attache for the Tunisian National Tourist Office, said that it "opens up the desert" and also highlighted its links to famous movies.

She stated: "It takes approximately two hours to get to Matmata, where Star Wars was filmed, or to Tataouine and from there you can go across to Douz or where the English Patient was filmed with the rolling desert."

Commenting on the other experiences on offer on Djerba, Ms Davies said: "You"ve got the beaches, which is a big pull in itself, and there"s lots of hotels lined along the coast. It"s quite well known for thalasso therapy as well."

Recent figures from the Tunisian National Tourist Office showed that the country welcomed 8.1% more visitors in 2009 than in the previous year.
