Florida attraction to mark 50th anniversary by Cheap Flights Booker UK

America"s first underwater park will this year mark its 50th anniversary in Key Largo, the gateway to the Florida Keys.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park will celebrate the occasion from 1 to 11 December.

The nature reserve was founded on 10 December 1960 and named after newspaper editor John Pennekamp, who played an important part in its establishment.

Today, it welcomes more than 1m visitors every year, who come to explore its 70 square nautical miles of nature trails, beaches and other sites that provide a habitat for an abundance of wildlife.

Highlights of the 50th anniversary celebration will include a keynote speech by Dr Sylvia Earle, Time magazine"s first "hero for the planet".

There will also be events to highlight the park"s mission to protect its natural resources, including continental America"s only living coral barrier reef.
