Commenting on plans for the future, Mr Khwaja revealed that the industry will be focusing on rural tourism to ensure that the benefit of growing interest in the nation "percolates down to the grassroots levels while giving an experience to visitors".

Adventurous travellers can take advantage of some of the outdoor pursuits and activities on offer in India, such as mountaineering in the Himalayas or white-water rafting on the Ganges.
