Lufthansa First Carrier To Use Biofuel On Commercial Flights

Lufthansa first carrier to use biofuel on commercial flights by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Lufthansa has announced a new project backed by the German government that will make it the first airline to use biofuel on commercial flights for a sustained period of time.

In April 2011, the carrier will begin a six-month trial on scheduled Airbus A321 services on its Hamburg to Frankfurt route.

Pending certification, one of the plane"s engines will be powered by an equal mix of biofuel and traditional kerosene.

The project will focus on the effect of biofuel on engine life and maintenance and is expected to save about 1,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in six months.

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Lufthansa chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said: "Lufthansa will be the world"s first airline to utilise biofuel in flight operations within the framework of a long-term trial.

"This is a further consistent step in a proven sustainability strategy, which Lufthansa has for many years successfully pursued and implemented."

Germany"s parliamentary state secretary and aerospace coordinator Peter Hinze said the government fully supported the aviation industry in its efforts to establish a "safe and sustainable" air traffic system.
