Turkey targeting "top five" status by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Turkey has set itself a target of becoming one of the world"s top five tourism destinations.
Speaking at a press conference at the World Travel Market in London, Ozgur Ozaslan, a spokesman for the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, pointed out that the country has continued to report growth in visitor numbers in recent years despite the global economic downturn.
Some 27m people visited Turkey in 2009, marking an increase of 2.8% from the previous year.
"This year growth looks set to be even more spectacular, according to data which reveal over 23m visitors arriving to Turkey so far in the first nine months of 2010, translating to a year-on-year increase in tourist arrivals of 6%," Mr Ozaslan said.
"Our aim is now to become one of the top five tourism destinations in the world."
Turkey picked up the "favourite destination" accolade in the 2010 Conde Nast Traveller Reader"s Awards.
The city of Istanbul has been particularly popular this year as a result of its European Capital of Culture status.
