Tourists flock to Bethlehem this Christmas by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Tourism to the religious and historic town of Bethlehem is on the increase this Christmas, new figures reveal.
According to official estimates, some 90,000 pilgrims from all over the world will visit the traditional birthplace of Jesus, injecting business into the local economy.
The Bethlehem department of tourism said there has been a 75 per cent increase in activity based on 2009 figures and revealed that 1.45 million tourists have visited Bethlehem since the beginning of the year - a 60 per cent increase from last year.
Bethlehem now has 31 hotels - a five-fold increase from 1995 - and more are being built to help accommodate the influx of tourists to the region.
The figures signal a revival of the town"s tourism industry, which was decimated by the second Palestinian uprising a decade ago.
Dr Samir Hazboun, director of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce, told the Independent: "You won"t find a room in Bethlehem this Christmas."
