800m more travellers expected by 2014 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The overall number of air travellers will rise by 800m to 3.3bn by 2014, according to the latest industry forecast from the International Air Transport Association (Iata).
Of the 800m additional flight passengers expected in three years" time, 360m are set to travel on Asia Pacific routes.
The US is predicted to remain the largest single country market for both domestic and international passengers - numbering 671m and 215m respectively.
Giovanni Bisignani, Iata"s director general and chief executive, said the findings indicate that the world will continue to become more mobile over the coming years, despite some regional differences.
"This creates enormous opportunities but also presents some challenges. In five years we need to be able to handle 800m more passengers," he added.
"To realise the economic growth potential that this will bring, we will need even more efficient air traffic management, airport facilities and security programs. Industry and governments will be challenged to work together even more closely."
Iata predicts that the fastest-growing markets for international passenger traffic over the coming years will be China, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
