American Airlines has launched a new application for use on the Android operating system.

The company said that the new offering "continues its charge in the mobile app space" following the launch of its iPhone and iPad platforms, which have attracted more than 1m downloads.

Like its Apple predecessors, the Android application allows users to check in for flights, view terminal maps and see details relating to their gate, seat and journey status.

Other features include the ability to set parking reminders and use satellite technology to locate the nearest airport served by American Airlines.
