Countries in the Central America region proved a popular choice among international travellers last year, new figures from the area"s tourism agency suggest.
More than 7.14m foreign tourists visited Central America in the first ten months of 2010 - 9.8% more than in the same period in the previous year.
Some 583,400 visitors came from European countries - a figure that represented a 5.6% year-on-year increase.
According to the Central America Tourism Agency (CATA), the country is becoming increasingly popular among people seeking multiple experiences, such as beach breaks combined with watersports and wildlife tours.
Highlighting some of the events on offer to holidaymakers, the CATA revealed that the resort of Punta Roca in El Salvador will be the setting for the World Master Surfing Championship this year.
World-leading surfers from more than 30 countries across the globe will participate in the event, which is set to take place from 16 to 23 October.
