Older Travellers Now Take More Than A Third Of All Holidays
Older travellers "now take more than a third of all holidays" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Older consumers are making an important contribution to the travel industry, with a third of all holidays now taken by people over the age of 50, according to research by insurance provider LV
The company found that over-50s typically spend a collective total of £17.6bn a year on travel, accounting for more than half (51%) of all overseas holiday spending and 43% of UK tourism expenditure.
On average, travellers belonging to this age group end up spending £883 on each overseas break, compared to £528 for their younger counterparts.
While Spain, France and Italy remain the most popular countries for the older demographic, less mainstream destinations such as Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia are attracting the attention of holidaymakers who want to head "off the beaten track", according to LV
Selwyn Fernandes, managing director of the firm"s travel insurance division, said: "This research shows that the travel habits of the UK"s older citizens hugely benefit the domestic and overseas tourism industries and by 2020 we can expect to see the over-50s making half of all trips."
The study revealed that city breaks have overtaken package trips as the holiday of choice for older travellers, while getaways based around culture and hobbies are also proving popular.
