Popular films "boosting UK tourism industry" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Hit movies featuring locations in the UK are having a beneficial effect on the tourism industry by drawing more visitors to attractions, new figures suggest.

The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) revealed that sites such as Antony, a National Trust property in Cornwall, benefited from a profile boost provided by big film releases in 2010.

Antony, which was used in Tim Burton"s Alice in Wonderland, saw its visitor figures increase from 25,000 to almost 100,000 last year.

The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich was recently visited by Johnny Depp for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film and is expected to benefit when the movie is released in May 2011.

London"s British Museum retained its position at the top of the list of visitor figures for ALVA members for the fourth year in a row in 2010, partly thanks to the BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 Objects and the associated exhibition.

Another popular site among visitors to London, the Natural History Museum, welcomed more guests after featuring in the BBC Two behind-the-scenes series Museum of Life.

Commenting on the importance of continued government investment in the UK tourism industry, ALVA director Robin Broke said: "The tourism industry is of huge value to the UK economy, and financially it represents an excellent return on investment. It is a great creator of employment, particularly for young people."
