Abta Welcomes Decision To Freeze Flight Tax
Abta welcomes decision to freeze flight tax by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Abta - The Travel Association has welcomed the confirmation in yesterday"s (23 March) Budget that there will be no increase in air passenger duty (APD) this year.
The organisation also supports the review of the duty"s "arbitrary and illogical" banding system, under which flights to the Caribbean are taxed more heavily than longer journeys to the west coast of the US.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said the freeze is "good news" for holidaymakers, who are expected to pay about £145m less for their flights.
"We will now be reviewing the details of the consultation and the proposed tax changes to make sure that changes to the way APD is collected [are] not used as a cover to increase taxation further," said Mr Tanzer.
While it welcomed the decision on APD, Abta expressed regret at the government"s decision to "back track" on its manifesto commitment to replace the duty with a per-plane tax.
The association claims that a per-plane system of taxation would provide an incentive for airlines to use their capacity more efficiently and invest in modern, more eco-friendly aircraft.
