Fort Lauderdale proves popular for winter breaks by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Fort Lauderdale in Florida has enjoyed a strong winter tourism season, according to the local visitor office.
During January 2011, occupancy at hotels in the city reached 75%, which was the highest in the state of Florida and some 27% higher than the national average at that time of year.
Despite cancellations due to severe weather across the country, total passenger traffic at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood airport in January was up 5.1% year-on-year.
The number of international travellers catching flights to and from the destination increased by 16.3%, contributing to the 17th consecutive month of growth in overall traffic.
Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: "We entered 2011 with optimism, convinced that Greater Fort Lauderdale offers a high-value, multi-faceted tourism experience with tremendous appeal to a broad cross-section of domestic and international travellers.
"These latest figures for air traffic and hotels validate our faith and point to tangible outcomes resulting from strong marketing efforts by the entire destination."
Holidaymakers planning a trip to Florida can also catch flights to Orlando, Miami and other destinations.
