Travellers who will be visiting Japan during the spring months will have the opportunity to see the country"s cherry blossom, which has been recommended as one of its most spectacular natural sights.

Kylie Clark, PR and marketing manager for the Japan National Tourism Organisation, pointed out that the blossom is visible from as early as January on the Okinawa islands in the south and until May on the northernmost island of Hokkaido.

"Most visitors to Japan aim to hit the cherry blossom season at the very end of March/early April when the blossoms are out in Tokyo and Kyoto," said Ms Clark.

"Japan showered in pink petals is stunningly beautiful, but cherry blossom season is just one of many great times to visit Japan and appreciate the landscape and culture."

The spokeswoman encouraged travellers visiting later in the spring to look out for the irises and azaleas that emerge in May and June, while striking red, yellow and orange leaves are visible during the autumn months.

Japan is home to 29 national parks and iconic natural landmarks such as Mount Fuji.
