Strong Growth For Scottish Airports
Strong growth for Scottish airports by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Airport operator BAA has released figures indicating strong demand for flights from travellers based in Scotland last month.
The company"s figures for February show that all three of its Scottish bases - Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen - reported year-on-year increases in traffic and strong performance on scheduled routes to European destinations.
Edinburgh experienced the highest passenger boost of 5%, while Aberdeen and Glasgow recorded gains of 4.9% and 3.9% respectively.
During what is traditionally the quietest month of the year, London Heathrow achieved a 0.5% year-on-year increase in traffic.
However, both Stansted and Southampton handled fewer passengers in February 2011 than in the same month last year.
Announcing the figures, BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said the company "remains focused" on improving the service it offers to passengers and also commented on the issue of flight taxation.
"We remain concerned that increases in air passenger duty planned by the government will affect the relative competitiveness of UK aviation and damage the UK"s international trading position," he said.
"Aviation plays an important role in promoting economic growth and the industry should not be treated simply as a source of revenue."
