Estonia is welcoming an increasing number of travellers from the UK and Ireland, with visitor figures increasing by 34% year-on-year in January 2011, the national tourist board has revealed.
The growth represents a positive start to a year that will see the country"s capital, Tallinn, hosting more than 7,000 events to reflect its European Capital of Culture status.
Estonia is also celebrating its 20th anniversary of gaining independence from the Soviet Union.
Britain and Ireland was the fifth largest tourism source market for the nation in January this year, behind only its neighbouring countries Finland, Russia, Latvia and Sweden.
The total number of international travellers staying in hotels and other accommodation establishments in Estonia reached nearly 88,000, 22% more than in January 2010.
Tarmo Mutso, the country"s director of tourism, said: "Tallinn is one of two European Capitals of Culture in 2011 and this is attracting a lot of interest in the city, not least as a result of the extensive media coverage we"ve had right across Europe."
Mr Mutso also highlighted the forthcoming launch of easyJet flights to Tallinn from Liverpool on 26 April, which will complement the airline"s existing route to the city from London Stansted.
