Airport operator BAA has announced passenger traffic figures for March, revealing that flights to European destinations are proving highly popular from Scotland.
At Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, the number of travellers on European services was up by 10.5% and 20.8% respectively compared to March 2010.
The strong demand for flights to the continent contributed to overall gains in traffic at both bases, with Glasgow reporting a 2.4% year-on-year increase and Edinburgh experiencing a 7.2% rise.
Aberdeen airport also handled more passengers, with an 8.6% improvement on last year.
At Heathrow, passenger numbers increased by 2.3% year-on-year, although BAA noted that "external events" last year such as the British Airways cabin crew strikes and volcanic ash disruption make comparisons difficult.
Colin Matthews, the airport operator"s chief executive, said: "Heathrow"s performance is solid and the growth in traffic at our Scottish airports is encouraging."
Mr Matthews also commented on the performance of Stansted and Southampton airports, which reported declines of 7.4% and 8.7% respectively.
"While Stansted and Southampton"s traffic performance remains disappointing, both are well placed to benefit from an upturn in leisure travel as the economy improves," he said.
