Space shuttle to go on permanent display in Florida by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Families visiting Florida in future will have a brand new sight to see at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, following the announcement that the space shuttle Atlantis is to go on permanent display at the site.
Atlantis, which is one of three orbiters in Nasa"s shuttle fleet, is due to be retired this year after flying its last space mission.
It will be showcased at the Florida attraction as part of a $100m (£61.4m) exhibit covering an area of 65,000 square feet.
Due to have its grand opening in 2013, the new home for the spacecraft will provide the opportunity for guests to view the shuttle up close and learn more about its complex workings.
The display will also highlight some of the accomplishments of Nasa"s Space Shuttle Programme, such as the Hubble telescope and the International Space Station.
Bill Moore, chief operating officer at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, said: "We are honoured to be entrusted with space shuttle Atlantis, to preserve this remarkable national treasure and share the space shuttle story with millions of visitors from around the world.
"Plans are underway to create a home for Atlantis that is as much about the thousands of people who have worked on the Space Shuttle Programme as the space shuttle itself. Guests will be close enough to almost touch this real space-flown orbiter."
The complex is located not far from the popular family holiday destination of Orlando in Florida.
