Stansted voted best airport for low-cost carriers by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers have voted London Stansted the world"s best airport for low-cost flights.
The UK base received the honour at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2011, ahead of Brussels Charleroi and Luton, which were ranked second and third respectively.
Nick Barton, managing director of Stansted, welcomed the accolade and said it is made particularly special by the fact that it is based on the feedback of some 11.38m passengers of about 100 different nationalities.
"Stansted is firmly established as a world leader at serving the low-cost airline sector that has transformed air travel," he added.
"We have a route network that stretches to around 150 destinations with Stansted now offering more direct scheduled European flights than any other airport in the world."
Hong Kong International was named airport of the year ahead of Singapore Changi and Seoul Incheon, while Munich, Amsterdam Schiphol, Zurich and Copenhagen all featured in the top ten.
Shanghai Hongqiao and OR Tambo in Johannesburg were both recognised for their recent improvements, while Doha International, Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi were named the leading premium airports owing to services provided by Qatar Airways, Lufthansa and Etihad Airways respectively.
