United Airlines celebrating 85th anniversary by Cheap Flights Booker UK
United Airlines yesterday (6 April) commemorated its 85th anniversary by unveiling a specially designed Airbus A320 sporting the airline"s 1970s "Friend Ship" livery.
Selected for the anniversary event by employees last autumn, the aircraft features red and blue stripes and a star pattern.
This week"s celebration took place at Chicago O"Hare airport and similar events will be held at a number of United and Continental Airlines" hubs, including international bases in Denver, San Francisco and Houston.
Jeff Smisek, United Airlines" president and chief executive, said: "We are proud to celebrate United"s 85th anniversary with the more than 85,000 co-workers and thousands of retirees who have built the world"s leading airline."
The company began life as Varney Air Service in 1926, adopting its current name in 1933.
In comparison to the year of its establishment, when fewer than 6,000 people paid to travel by plane in America, United now carries more than 150m passengers every year.
Along with Continental, the airline operates more than 5,000 daily flights to destinations across the world, including major US cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC.
