Virgin Atlantic passengers will soon have access to an award-winning inflight entertainment system, following the announcement that the airline has agreed a long-term partnership with Panasonic Avionics Corporation.

The eX2 entertainment offering and eXPhone communications service will be available onboard the airline"s new fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft.

Passengers will be able to search for films of their choice and create playlists for their flights through the eX2 system, which also allows users to rate movies and read comments from critics before choosing what to watch.

The eXPhone facility will allow travellers to send and receive emails and text messages and make calls onboard.

Steve Ridgway, Virgin Atlantic"s chief executive officer, said: "Virgin Atlantic has a well-deserved reputation for leading the way in inflight entertainment and technology - we were the first airline to offer individual seat-back TVs for all passengers almost 20 years ago - and I have no doubt this system will again set new standards that our competitors will seek to follow."

The airline recently introduced the first plane in its new Airbus A330 fleet on the route linking Manchester to Orlando.
