Virgin Atlantic has revealed some of the most bizarre items that passengers have attempted to check in when flying from the airline"s international destinations.

Travellers at New York JFK have brought an array of unusual objects with them, including a pet tarantula that was hidden in a woman"s coat and a dead cow.

One passenger had her family carry a bath tub through the airport and expected the airline to allow it onto the plane.

In Delhi, a Virgin Atlantic customer attempted to check in a bag of cutlery that he had stolen from a previous flight, while a loved-up couple who met on the Caribbean island of Grenada wanted to bring back a bag of sand and seawater.

Greg Dawson, the airline"s director of corporate communications, said: "Virgin Atlantic check-in staff see thousands of passengers on a daily basis but every now and then, a passenger will arrive at check-in with something you would never expect - it certainly brightens up their day."
