Asia Pacific Region Welcoming More Travellers
Asia Pacific region welcoming more travellers by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Asia and the Pacific region saw a 5% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers in the first quarter of 2011, despite challenges such as the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March, new figures show.
South Asia experienced a 13% rise in arrivals during the first three months of the year, with India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka all proving particularly popular.
Cambodia and Thailand welcomed 18% and 14% more tourists respectively, while Myanmar reported visitor numbers that were 30% up on last year.
These countries contributed to 10% growth in south-east Asia in the opening quarter of 2011, figures from the Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata) show.
In the Pacific region, Kiribati, Palau, Hawaii and New Caledonia all welcomed more travellers.
Offering some information for people planning a trip to Japan in the near future, Pata chief executive Bill Calderwood said: "It is now over two months since the earthquake and tsunami hit the coast of Tohoku region in Japan and the situation appears to be slowly returning to normal.
"Thankfully, many countries have eased travel restrictions. The larger part of Japan remains physically unaffected by the disaster."
