Atol Scheme Could Be Extended To Boost Consumer Protection
Atol scheme could be extended to boost consumer protection by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Air Travel Organisers" Licensing (Atol) scheme, which provides protection for customers in the event that their holiday provider goes bust while they are abroad, is set to be reformed to offer more comprehensive cover for consumers.
Speaking this week at a law seminar hosted by Abta - The Travel Association, Kate Jennings of the Department for Transport (DfT) said that the changes to the system are set to be introduced in January 2012.
A DfT consultation is expected shortly and will invite views on the prospect of extending Atol cover to include airlines, which would boost the range of protection available to Britons catching flights abroad.
Abta has already called for the programme to encompass all holidays regardless of how they are booked, including "flight plus" arrangements and click-through sales.
Simon Bunce, head of legal services for the industry association, said: "Today has highlighted just how important the next phase of consultation on Atol reform is.
"As an industry, we need to continue to get the message through to government that the exclusion of airlines and click-through sales from these arrangements will cause confusion among consumers and create an unlevel playing field for the industry."
